Allergy FAQs

Here at Valley Animal Hospital located in Clifton, NJ, our veterinary team provides a range of services in our comfortable, state-of-the-art clinic. Among the conditions treated, pet allergies are some of the most common issues we encounter. We are here to answer any questions you have about your specific pet, but in the meantime, here are a few of the most frequently asked questions regarding pet allergies.

1. Why Is My Pet Allergic to a Certain Substance?

Basically, an allergy is a glitch in a pet's immune system. When a certain substance is introduced to your pet, its immune system mistakes it for a dangerous, foreign invader (like a virus or bacteria), causing the immune system to spring into action. This will cause a variety of symptoms.

2. What Are the Causes of Allergies in Pets?

There are a few main causes of pet allergies:

  • Fleas: These pesky pests suck the blood of pets and take up residence in fur. This irritates its skin, causing inflammation and itching.
  • Food: Certain ingredients like wheat, chicken, and eggs can trigger an allergic reaction.
  • Environmental: Things like pollen, mold, dust, ragweed, and household cleaners can cause various reactions in your pet.

3. What Are the Signs My Pet Has an Allergy?

Depending on what allergen your pet is exposed to will determine how its body reacts. Signs and symptoms include scratching, licking, biting, red and inflamed spots, bald patches, sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, runny and swollen eyes, and rubbing on the floor or against furniture.

4. How Can a Vet Help My Pet with Allergies?

At Valley Animal Hospital, our team will conduct a thorough assessment of your pet's condition, which may include blood and skin testing. Once we determine what allergen is causing the symptoms, we may prescribe an antihistamine or corticosteroid medication to quickly relieve symptoms.

We may also recommend flea treatment, medicated shampoo, a change in food, or a dietary supplement. You can also help by washing your pets' bedding on a regular basis and wiping down their face and paws when they come back from being outside.

Read What Our Clients Say

  • "Great care of my cat! All the staff were wonderful to deal with and you can tell they really care and love what they do! Thanks for taking care of us!"

  • "Dr. Henderson is a caring Vet. We love him.
We do not, however, love the prices Vets charge. It is more for a pet visit than a human being. I don't know how people with more than one animal afford pet care."
